What we do

Intelisys develops remote drinking water monitoring instruments and the Clamnet platform. We help water companies and their delivery partners obtain useful evidence about distribution behaviour, bringing together measurement technology, practical network experience and applied research.

A strong basis

Intelisys Limited was founded as a University of Manchester spinout by Dr Stephen Boult, taking applied environmental research into commercial monitoring instruments. The company has developed water and ground gas monitoring products under both the Intelisys and Salamander Group names.

Our leadership team has a long history of involvement in mains rehabilitation, water quality investigation and network modelling experience which we use to help our customers design and use monitoring well

The business traded as Salamander Group for a period and has now returned to its legal company name, Intelisys Limited. Same company, same registration, same people.

Dr Stephen Boult — Founder

Stephen founded Intelisys as a University of Manchester spinout and remains a director. He is Senior Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester, where he leads the Molecular Environmental Science research group.

His research covers hydrology and hydrochemistry, and includes work on water quality management in potable distribution networks — discolouration caused by metal oxides, and the monitoring of chlorine residual. He holds three patents and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals across more than twenty-five years of applied environmental research. The arguments set out in our discussion papers rest on the same body of research — distribution behaviour, residual decay and discolouration — that Stephen has published on for two decades.

In 2015, Stephen won an impact award for developing new instruments for monitoring drinking water and emissions of gas from the ground from NERC

Vincent Ewan — Managing Director

Vince has been a Director of Intelisys Limited since 2006, originally in an investment capacity, but as Managing Director for the past 6 years. Since becoming MD, he has been responsible for a major restructuring of the business ownership and its operations. This has taken Intelisys from a company that licenced product IP, to a business that fully controls its IP, manufactures and sells its own fully redeveloped products.

Vince has had a 40 year involvement in the water industry starting with 5 years at the Water Research Centre in Swindon where he worked on rehabilitation processes and water quality investigation, contributing to the first edition of the Water Mains Rehabilitation Manual. He progressed on to commercial leakage control and water mains network modelling projects in the early days of these disciplines.

On leaving WRc in 1987, he set up Ewan Associates, a water consultancy originally specialising in leakage control and network modelling projects. Over 20 years this business was grown in scale and expanded in scope to also undertake wastewater and water environmental projects. By 2006, when the company was acquired by Mouchel, Ewan Associates employed 300 people across seven offices from Stirling to Exeter.

During the period 2013 to 2022 Vince also worked as a Non-Executive Director at Ecus Limited, an environmental consultancy. The role was to advise on growth strategy, improve management capability and financial performance. The 8½ year involvement saw Ecus turnover increase 10 fold and move from loss making to substantial profitability, culminating with a sale to form a founding business in the Private Equity backed Cura Terrae Group.
